What is a Fiesta de Quinceañera?

I’ve had tons of questions about this festive celebration since we’ve had our first “quince” on the bus, and I’ve loved learning more about this tradition myself. So, what is a Fiesta de Quinceañera? In Latin America, a girl having her 15th birthday is called a Quinceañera, meaning “the girl who is fifteen.” It’s common to celebrate in a very lavish manner with family and friends and can simply be viewed as a glorified birthday party from the outside, but some families hold onto deeper meanings. The celebration marks the girls’ coming-of-age and introduction into society and can be compared to a debutante ball or a sweet 16 held in the US. It signifies the girls’ transition into womanhood with a nod to reaffirm her personal faith, heritage and responsibility. Many latin families located in the US continue this long-established custom from their homelands. The traditions surrounding a fiesta de Quinceañera can be social or religious depending on the family’s creed and the party can be elegantly simple to downright extravagant.

Customarily, the festivities start with a Catholic mass attended by the Quinceañera and her family. Mass is followed by a reception or party which friends and relatives are invited. The amount of preparation and planning that goes into the reception is similar to a wedding. The girl chooses her “court” which consists of seven males called “chambelanes” and seven females called “damas” who help with the planning process. The court is formed of family and best friends who may learn dances or help where needed. Some families choose to rent a limousine to transport the entire court and the Quinceañera, that’s why the Party Bus is the perfect choice for a Cache Valley quince celebration.

Other major aspects of the celebration include pampering, grooming and attire. A huge focal point will be the dress worn by the Quinceañera. Although, the dress is not meant to take centerstage, the grooming details such as hair, makeup, accessories, shoes, and nails are splurged on to make her feel confident on her special day. The girl also has a say in all the other planning details such as the venue, the music, the food, the colors, and the flowers. As the details of the party planning may add up, the girl may ask for “sponsors” to help pay for the event. During the reception, she would make a speech to thank each individual sponsor.

In the end, the Fiesta de Quinceañera has meaning, tradition, and symbolism all wrapped up and tied with a bow that reflects the personality, culture and beliefs of the girl. The fifteenth birthday party is a significant event that will be remembered throughout her lifetime.

Are you knowledgeable about quinces? Any other information you’d add? We loved having this group on the bus, we hope to have many more quinces onboard!
